Members/Volunteers Spring into Action for our Spring Newsletter

Our Spring 2017  Newsletter went out to our members and supporters last week.  Lots of useful information and details of some of the things coming up at Caring Together in the near future.

We send this by email to many of our supporters but most of our members like to get the paper copy, which as you can imagine is a lot of newsletters!!

As always our Caring Together members and volunteers came to the rescue.  First we had a small team in the office sticking on labels and packing envelopes and then we had an amazing team effort to get the newsletters out to older people in the area.  From delivering batches to a specific area or just dropping off a couple to neighbours it all added up to over 250 newsletters being either hand delivered or passed on in groups.

This saved Caring Together almost £140 in postage costs!!

So thank you to each and every one of you – you were amazing (and we hope no-one got caught in the rain)

OPAL – New Community Centre Open Day – Saturday 25th February

Our friends at OPAL (a scheme similar to Caring Together supporting older people in the Leeds 16 area) have been working very hard on renovating their new building and they are having an Open Day.

OPAL say, ‘Come along this Saturday 25th February​ 11am till 3pm to find out what’s happening at the Welcome In Community Centre.

We’re very lucky to have Brett Delaney & Keith Galloway from Leeds Rhinos visiting from 12 till 1pm and Ronnie the Rhino from 12 till 2pm.

There will be tea, coffee & cake plus face painting, craft and other stalls’

A lovely Community Lunch at the Community Cafe

SAM_2315Wednesday is Community Cafe day at Little London Community Centre and some of our members joined us there for a nice lunch and a chat.

The cafe is open every Wednesday 12noon to 1pm and you can get a very nice and very cheap meal.

Caring Together’s ‘Eating Together’ group meet there once a month – on the second Wednesday of the month.  If you would like to join us, the next time we will be there is Wednesday 9th December.  Just come along if you wish or give us a ring so we know to look out for you!

Cash machine scam – warning to be vigilant

West Yorkshire Police are asking residents of Headingley and Hyde Park to be vigilant when the withdrawing cash from local ATM machines. Four camera devices have been found in the past few weeks attached to ATM machines in these  areas. These carefully disguised devices are fixed above the cash machines and video record users inputting codes into the machine through a pin hole camera. This information is later used to defraud the customer. West Yorkshire Police are investigating these incidents and ask for any suspicious devices or behaviour around cash machines to be reported to us immediately.

University PC Mark Bottomley gives the following advice:

Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN with your hand.

If you notice anything unusual, odd or different about the machine or there are signs of tampering; do not use it, report it to the bank immediately and don’t let others use the machine.

If your cash or cards get trapped within the machine, report it to the bank immediately.

Stand close to the machine to avoid prying eyes over your shoulder and challenge anyone stood too close to you.

Don’t let any strangers distract you when at the ATM.

Always put your cash and card away before leaving the cash machine and never leave a receipt behind.

Finally always check your bank statements, fraudsters often will use low value transactions in an attempt to hide their thefts over a long period of time. Immediately notify your card company if something appears wrong.”

Care to Croon at Halcyon Court?

This group meets at the home on the last Thursday of each month at 11am to 12.30pm.  It is free!  If you want you can also stay for lunch which will cost just £2.50

Caring Together Needs You…….

Memoirs walking in Golden Acre………to stroll in the park and help us raise funds.

Saturday 5th September is the date for our annual Sponsored Stroll.

This event helps us to raise £hundreds for Caring Together’s work with local older people but we need your help.

The more strollers we have, the more money we can raise so if you are free on the afternoon of Saturday 5th September please stroll for us.  It will be a nice afternoon with friendly people, not too arduous – a circuit round the park (or more if you wish) and at the end a cup of tea and a certificate.  We ordered the sunshine too – so fingers crossed!

If you think you could stroll for us, please get in touch and we will send you a sponsor pack.

If you can’t stroll on the day, please think about supporting us by sponsoring one of our strollers or making a donation.

It’s Election Day – have your say!!

Well after all the weeks of campaigning, Election Day is finally here.

Today is the day when you have the chance to decide who makes the important decisions about how the country and our city will be run.  We, at Caring Together would encourage everyone to vote, whatever your political views.

So, please make sure your voice is heard today and cast your vote.

And remember that you can register for a postal vote in future elections, if getting to a polling station is difficult for you.

The Fashionable Lounge

A number of our members, along with other older people from across Leeds attend ‘The Fashionable Lounge’ at Leeds City Varieties.

An art, history and social group for older people, based at the world-famous City Varieties in Leeds.

Come along to explore the history of this beautiful music hall, look at some of our old photographs and programmes, share stories of the venue’s past and meet new people. All in the comfort of the beautiful Circle Bar.

Each week will explore a different area of the building’s history.  Perhaps listening to some recordings of favourite songs, exploring pantomime programmes or discovering some of the weird and wonderful acts that have trod the boards!

Some sessions will work with a  visiting artist to try a new skill relating to the music hall, perhaps singing, costume design, archive research or photography.

The group meet in the Circle Bar at City Varieties on the second Thursday of the month from 2pm-4pm. There is a suggested donation of £2 per session, including a hot drink and biscuits.

If you find public transport difficult, we are able to provide assisted transport from your home to City Varieties, with Leeds Alternative Transport.  To help us cover the cost of this service, we charge £1 per return journey.  If you would like to make use of this service, please let us know.
