World Book Night April 23rd – an online evening of events

On World Book Night – Friday April 23rd you can join The Reading Agency, from 6-9pm, for two exciting free events and a special #ReadingHour, in partnership with Specsavers and hosted by the British Library

  • 6-7pm: Kazuo Ishiguro in conversation with Kate Mosse
  • 7-8pm: #ReadingHour
  • 8-9pm: World Book Night presents: Books to Make You Smile, hosted by Sandi Toksvig.

Kazuo Ishiguro in conversation with Kate Mosse

Kazuo Ishiguro is one of the world’s most treasured and celebrated contemporary fiction authors, whose award-winning novels include Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day. He appears in conversation with no. 1 bestselling author Kate Mosse to discuss Klara and the Sun, his first book since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, in this special event presented by The Reading Agency and the British Library. The event also marks the 10th anniversary of World Book Night, The Reading Agency’s national celebration of books and reading.

Klara and the Sun is an intensely moving and beautiful exploration of human connection and creativity in the face of loneliness and advanced technologies. Ishiguro looks at our changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?

He talks to Kate Mosse about the inspiration for the novel, and the power of books and reading to bring people together and change lives.

Last year, we brought you the first #ReadingHour and because you loved it so much, we’ve brought it back for a second year. This hour is for you to dedicate to reading in any way; read alone or with others, listen to an audiobook while preparing your dinner, have a book club meeting, call a friend to chat about books – the possibilities are endless! Share what you’re doing on social media using #ReadingHour.

Together Moments: ‘Thursday’s Online Elevenses to your door….’

Our online Elevenses group continues to meet every Thursday at 11am. Last week I took the online session to Brenda’s door. Thanks to the kind donation of the winter warmer pack from Seagulls Brenda also got to model her well coordinated winter wellbeing hat, scarf and shawl too.

Shared Moments: ‘Meanwood Valley Urban Farm Stroll’

We were able to make the most of yet more beautiful sunny days this week with two walks to Meanwood Valley Urban Farm (https://www.mvuf.org.uk/). They opened last week. The cakes and breakfast sandwiches are definitely worth a try, if you have not tried already.

Our ‘Monday Monday Mind Workouts’ have been going for one year now. Below is the first one I posted mid April 2020. I never thought for one minute I would still be posting them a year later. I welcome the day we can resume them face to face.

Leeds Museums and Galleries – what’s reopening this week

Kirkstall Abbey

Lotherton 

Wildlife World is reopening from Monday, but please make sure you book a ticket before visiting.

(please also only go if you intend to send us pictures of the warty pigs afterwards)

The playground, toilets, shop and café will also be open.

Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey is fully open for all of your Cistercian monastic ruin needs, including the shop, which does sell ice cream.

Conveniently, research shows that the ruins are best enjoyed with a wry smile and ice cream around your chops.

We’re open Tues – Sun, 10am – 4pm.

Abbey House Museum 

Over the road, the shop at Abbey House Museum will be open. Hooray!

Temple Newsam 

Home Farm at Temple Newsam will be open from Monday, but please book online before you visit.

The playground and toilets will also be open along with Temple Newsam Tearooms for takeaways and outdoor seating. The shop will be open from Tuesday.

Leeds Industrial Museum

The shop at Leeds Industrial Museum will be open from Tuesday, so drop in and show the site a little support.

The grounds at Leeds Industrial Museum are open and beautiful, thanks to our hard working team of volunteers (who wrote a blog about it). Have a stroll through and admire their lovely green-fingers.

Leeds Art Gallery

The Leeds Art Gallery Shop will be open from Tuesday and stocked t’brim with local gifts and art inspired homewares if you’re planning a trip into the city.

The rest of our venues – and the indoor parts of these ones! – are gearing up to see you all in May.

Free regular rapid covid testing available for everyone without symptoms.

Anyone in England who does not have symptoms can now get regular rapid lateral flow tests to check for coronavirus.

Information:  If you have coronavirus symptoms, you need a different test called a PCR test. Get a PCR test if you have coronavirus symptoms on GOV.UK

How to get regular rapid tests

Go to a test site

You can go to a rapid lateral flow test site to get a rapid test.

If you go to a test site:

  • you may need an appointment, so check before you go
  • a trained helper might be able to help you do the test
  • you’ll get a text or email with the result when it’s ready

Find your nearest rapid lateral flow test site

Get a test to do at home

You can get rapid tests to do at home.

You can collect up to 2 packs of 7 tests from a local pharmacy or test site:

You can get a pack of 7 tests sent to your home. Order rapid lateral flow home test kits on GOV.UK

If you do tests at home, you’ll need to report your results online or on the phone.
