On Sunday 12 June 2016, Leeds will host a stage of the prestigious International World Triathlon Union’s (ITU) World Triathlon Series. First started in 2009, the ITU World Triathlon Series is the premier series within the field of international triathlon. For Leeds to be staging one of the races in this year’s series represents another major world-class sporting coup for the city. The best elite Olympic and world champion triathletes (including Leeds’ own Brownlee brothers) will come from around the globe to compete in the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds 2016. One of only nine stages of the international series, the event sees Leeds positioned on a global level alongside Abu Dhabi, Gold Coast, Cape Town, Yokohama, Stockholm, Hamburg, Edmonton and Cozumel.
The elite Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds 2016 event will follow the standard Olympic distance of 1.5km swim within the tranquil setting of Roundhay Park’s Waterloo Lake, before the athletes head into the city centre on a 40km bike ride, finishing with a 10km run around the iconic city centre.
With live TV coverage on BBC2 once again showcasing our great city to an international audience, there are a range of activities/ events for you to get involved with over the whole weekend – including an over 50s amateur triathlon if anyone fancies competing!
Please also note that there will be lots of road closures and alterations to public transport this weekend.
